Be prepared to get grounded for a few months. Taking my case for examples, I was on hiatus from Web Design for a couple of years due to change in circumstances. I had solid foundations and fundamentals in web design and web development, but after the absences I felt I needed to brush up my skills, so I moved into my parent's place to save money. I spent 6 months learning new skills and a brand new portfolio. Soon, I landed my first online job and several other freelance gigs.

You need to be working in your space for a while and know the space quite well. You can't just be a newbie graphic designer and expect to be able to travel to Europe for 6 months, it's not going to happen and it is unrealistic.
It is not a vacation. Yes, read it again, it is not a vacation, you will need to work hard and try not to be distracted. There will be week nights when you need to stay up to meet a deadline or have meetings.
